The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has declared a nationwide strike following the federal government’s failure to pay June 2025 salaries of university lecturers. The union announced the action as part of its long-standing “No Pay, No Work” policy, instructing members in affected universities to suspend academic activities until all outstanding payments are made.
ASUU President, Professor Chris Piwuna, emphasized that the industrial action is not indefinite but a targeted response to the non-payment of wages. He clarified that universities which have received their June salaries, such as the University of Abuja and University of Jos, will continue operations, while others with pending payments are to remain shut.
The union accuses the Office of the Accountant General of deliberately withholding salaries, despite the availability of salary processing platforms like the Integrated Payroll and Personnel Information System (IPPIS) and the Government Integrated Financial Management Information System (GIFMIS). ASUU argues that the delay is not technical but an intentional move to undermine the union’s demands.
In addition to salary delays, ASUU is also demanding the release of a ₦10 billion balance from the ₦50 billion Earned Academic Allowance (EAA) earlier agreed upon with the federal government. So far, only ₦40 billion has been disbursed. The union has warned that failure to pay both the outstanding salaries and allowances by July 31 may lead to a full-blown nationwide strike affecting all public universities.
The latest development reignites the longstanding tensions between ASUU and the federal government, raising fresh concerns about the stability of Nigeria’s public university system and the future of academic activities across the country.
