Kemi Badenoch, leader of the United Kingdom’s Conservative Party, stated in a CNN interview that despite being Nigerian by descent, she cannot pass her Nigerian citizenship to her children because she is a woman. She contrasted this with the UK’s immigration system, which she says allows many Nigerians to acquire British citizenship relatively easily.
She used this example to highlight what she described as Nigeria’s restrictive gender-based nationality laws. In her view, while she—through her parents—holds Nigerian citizenship, her children are excluded purely because of her gender. Meanwhile, Nigerians can migrate to the UK and eventually become citizens without similar obstacles.
Badenoch also addressed cultural integration in the UK, firmly rejecting the idea of immigrants forming isolated “mini-Nigeria” enclaves. She argued that this practice would be unacceptable and is not tolerated in other countries, including Nigeria.
Furthermore, she emphasized that under her leadership, the UK would tighten its immigration rules. She aims to make it significantly harder for immigrants to obtain British citizenship, arguing that the current system is too permissive and vulnerable to exploitation.
Opponents, especially among Nigerian communities, have criticized her proposals as hypocritical—citing her own access to British citizenship by birth and accusing her of trying to shut the door she once walked through.
