The National Association of Nigeria Nurses and Midwives (NANNM) has announced a seven-day nationwide warning strike scheduled to commence on Tuesday, July 30, 2025. The decision follows the expiration of a 15-day ultimatum issued to the Federal Government over unmet demands concerning the welfare and working conditions of nurses across the country.
In a statement signed by NANNM President, Comrade Morakinyo-Olajide Rilwan, and National Secretary, Comrade Enya Austin Osinachi, the union declared that all nurses and midwives working in Federal Health Institutions will fully withdraw their services during the strike action.The association expressed disappointment over the government’s failure to act on the issues raised in their earlier communications.
According to the union, the government’s offer was both inadequate and discriminatory. They accused the authorities of neglecting the concerns of nurses while favoring other health sector professionals. Among the key demands put forward by NANNM are the implementation and gazetting of the revised 2016 Nurses’ Scheme of Service, the review of allowances including hazard, shift duty, and call duty, and the recognition of the consultancy cadre for nurses. The union is also calling for the creation of a separate Department of Nursing at the Federal Ministry of Health and improved representation in healthcare decision-making bodies.
NANNM warned that the strike could significantly disrupt health services, as nurses and midwives constitute a large portion of the workforce in Nigeria’s public health institutions. The union urged the government to take immediate steps toward meeting their demands to avoid prolonged industrial action that could cripple the healthcare system.
