Osun Government Issues Flood Alert, Orders Evacuation of Residents in Risk Zones

The Osun State Government has issued a strong warning to residents living in flood-prone areas to evacuate immediately as heavy rains intensify and the risk of flooding increases. This directive follows recent flood alerts from the Nigeria Hydrological Services Agency (NIHSA), which listed Osun among several states likely to experience severe flooding in the coming weeks.

Commissioner for Environment and Sanitation, Mayowa Adejoorin, emphasized that the government is taking proactive steps to safeguard lives and property. He urged residents in low-lying areas and near riverbanks to relocate without delay. According to him, illegal structures obstructing water channels will be demolished to allow free flow of water and reduce the risk of flood disasters.

In addition, the state government has initiated the clearing of drainage systems and desilting of waterways to ensure water channels are not blocked. Adejoorin also noted that efforts are underway to collaborate with federal agencies such as the Ogun-Osun River Basin Development Authority to bolster the state’s flood prevention strategy.

He assured the public that the administration is committed to addressing environmental threats while calling on citizens to cooperate with officials and prioritize safety as the rainy season progresses.
