The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has rejected the Revenue Mobilisation Allocation and Fiscal Commission’s (RMAFC) proposed salary review for political office holders, describing it as unjust and ill-timed. The union argued that the decision is insensitive to the economic hardship facing ordinary Nigerians, many of whom struggle to survive on meagre wages.
NLC President, Joe Ajaero, criticized the proposal, stressing that while public servants have endured stagnant wages and delayed promotions, political leaders continue to benefit from preferential treatment. He warned that such a move would deepen inequality, erode social justice, and further alienate citizens from governance.
The labour body also questioned the lack of transparency in the process, demanding that RMAFC disclose the current pay structure of political office holders and the basis for its recommendation. Ajaero maintained that public service should be about sacrifice and responsibility, not personal enrichment.
He further cautioned that increasing salaries for politicians at a time of widespread poverty and economic hardship could provoke public anger and unrest. The NLC insisted that the focus should be on raising workers’ wages and improving living conditions rather than enriching a privileged few in power.
