The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has announced the suspension of its two-week warning strike across Nigerian public universities. The decision was reached after the union’s National Executive Council meeting held in Abuja, where members resolved to give the Federal Government a one-month grace period to address their demands.
ASUU President, Professor Chris Piwuna, who briefed journalists after the meeting, said the suspension followed appeals from various stakeholders, including the National Assembly and concerned Nigerians, urging the union to consider the interest of students.
He explained that the union expects the government to take meaningful steps within the next 30 days to resolve lingering issues such as unpaid allowances, poor funding of universities, and non-implementation of previous agreements.
Professor Piwuna, however, warned that if the Federal Government fails to honour its commitments within the stipulated period, ASUU would be left with no choice but to resume its suspended strike action. He emphasized that the union remains committed to defending the welfare of its members and ensuring a stable and quality university system in Nigeria.
