President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved a major shake-up in Nigeria’s military hierarchy with the appointment of new service chiefs to lead the Armed Forces. The announcement marks a significant reorganization aimed at strengthening national security and enhancing coordination among the military branches.
In the new appointments, General Olufemi Oluyede from Ekiti State has been named the Chief of Defence Staff, while Major General Waidi Shaibu from Kaduna State takes over as the Chief of Army Staff. Air Vice Marshal S.K. Aneke from Benue State has been appointed as the Chief of Air Staff, and Rear Admiral Idi Abbas from Kano State is the new Chief of Naval Staff. Major General E.A.P. Undiendeye from Cross River State retains his position as the Chief of Defence Intelligence.
The reshuffle comes in the wake of reported internal tensions and allegations of a coup plot within the military. President Tinubu emphasized that the new service chiefs must demonstrate loyalty, discipline, and a renewed commitment to safeguarding Nigeria’s sovereignty. He expressed confidence that the appointments would usher in a new era of professionalism and stability in the nation’s security architecture.
