The Turkish government has authorized its embassy in Abuja to begin issuing visas directly to Nigerian business travelers, effectively eliminating the requirement for prior clearance from Turkey. This significant development was announced by the Turkish Ambassador to Nigeria, Mehmet Poroy, who described the measure as a major boost for economic and commercial cooperation between the two countries.
Ambassador Poroy made the announcement during a courtesy visit to the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, in Abuja. He emphasized that strengthening economic collaboration is a primary focus of Turkey’s engagement with Nigeria. The new arrangement allows the embassy to issue visas under certain conditions directly, which the Ambassador stated is an “important first step” to facilitate contact between the nations’ business communities and citizens.
FCT Minister Nyesom Wike welcomed the initiative, commending Turkey for simplifying a process that has historically caused frustration for residents and business travelers seeking to visit the country. Wike also reiterated the administration’s dedication to expanding economic ties, particularly with major Turkish commercial hubs like Istanbul, and assured the Ambassador that Abuja is committed to providing a conducive and secure environment for all legitimate businesses, including those operated by Turkish nationals. Additionally, the Ambassador revealed that Turkey is finalizing internal procedures to open a Consulate-General in Lagos, another practical move signaling a commitment to deeper diplomatic and commercial engagement.
