A Federal High Court in Abuja, under the leadership of Justice James Omotosho, has sentenced Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) leader Nnamdi Kanu to life imprisonment. He was found guilty on three major counts (1, 4, and 6) tied to terrorism charges, while also receiving a 20-year sentence on count 3 and a separate 5-year jail term on count 5. In his ruling, Justice Omotosho expressed that although the death penalty was a legal option, the court opted for life imprisonment, citing a degree of mercy amid the severe nature of Kanu’s offenses.
He also ruled that Kanu should be placed in a high-security correctional facility suited for high-risk inmates and prohibited him from using any digital devices, urging that his activities be closely monitored by security agencies. Further, the judge condemned Kanu’s unruly behavior in court, stating it signaled a lack of remorse for his actions.
