In a dramatic turn during Nnamdi Kanu’s terrorism trial, the Federal High Court in Abuja ruled on Thursday that proceedings will continue without him. The decision comes after what the judge labeled repeated misconduct and disruptive behavior from Kanu in the courtroom.
Justice James Omotosho explained that Kanu refused to present his defense within the six days allotted to him and instead caused disturbances — even blocking his own lawyers from speaking and confronting court security. According to the judge, Kanu “waived his right” to defend himself by failing to use his opportunity, and he now cannot argue that his constitutional right to a fair hearing was violated.
Highlighting the importance of order in the courts, Justice Omotosho called the judicial setting a “temple of justice” and stressed that no one is above the law. He argued that fundamental rights, while guaranteed, are not absolute — especially once an offered chance is ignored.
Given Kanu’s aggressive behavior, the court said it has grounds to proceed with its ruling and other legal processes without his presence. The trial was even broadcast live, with registrars confirming that cameras from major networks like NTA, Channels TV, AIT, and TVC were present.
