Residents of Akure, the bustling capital of Ondo State, welcomed the year’s first rainfall on Thursday with palpable joy as gentle showers swept across several neighbourhoods in the city. The early rain, felt in areas such as Oke-Aro, Roadblock, Oloko, Orita Obele and Oke-Odu, came as a much–needed respite from the recent intense heat that had prevailed in the region.
Many locals who spoke with correspondents described the downpour as a blessing and a positive sign for the year ahead. For some, the rain symbolised a fresh start, prompting expressions of gratitude and hope for good fortunes in the coming months. Mrs. Okon, one resident, said the rainfall brought renewed optimism, calling it a refreshing break and a hopeful signal of better days.
Another resident, Mr. Adeleke, echoed this sentiment, emphasising how the cooler weather eased discomfort from the prior dry spell and was welcomed by many across the affected communities. Alongside the showers, a mild breeze offered additional comfort, soothing residents and transforming the city’s atmosphere from sweltering to cool overnight.
