The Super Falcons of Nigeria secured a narrow 2-1 victory over Senegal’s Teranga Lionesses in a friendly match held at the Mobolaji Johnson Arena, Lagos, as part of their preparations for the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON). The clash, which served as a crucial warm-up fixture, saw star forwards Asisat Oshoala and Rasheedat Ajibade getting on the scoresheet for the Nigerian side.
Barcelona striker Oshoala opened the scoring in the 18th minute with a composed finish, giving Nigeria the lead early on. Team captain Ajibade doubled the advantage midway through the second half, showcasing her attacking flair. Senegal, however, managed to pull one back through Hapsatou Diallo in the 83rd minute, keeping the contest lively till the final whistle.
The match offered head coach Randy Waldrum a valuable opportunity to assess his squad ahead of the continental tournament. Nigeria will continue fine-tuning their strategy as they aim to reclaim the WAFCON title in Morocco, where they will face South Africa, Ghana, and Tanzania in the group stage.
