The Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) has announced a sharp increase in the cost of international passports, with the new rates set to take effect from September 1, 2025. Under the revised fee structure, Nigerians applying for a standard 32-page passport with a five-year validity will now pay ₦100,000, while the 64-page passport with a ten-year validity has been pegged at ₦200,000.
The NIS clarified that the new charges will only apply to applications made within Nigeria. However, Nigerians applying from outside the country will continue to pay the current fees of $150 for the 32-page booklet and $230 for the 64-page booklet.
According to the Service, the upward review became necessary to sustain the quality, security, and integrity of Nigerian passports while also improving service delivery across the country.
Meanwhile, the Federal Government has assured applicants that despite the hike, efforts are underway to ease the passport acquisition process. The Minister of Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, revealed that ongoing reforms will cut down the waiting period, with applicants expected to receive their passports within one week of submission. The move also includes centralized printing measures to reduce delays and curb extortion.
