The Rivers State Police Command has announced a major security breakthrough following the recovery of eight explosives, over 8,000 rounds of ammunition, and a large cache of sophisticated weapons. The operation, carried out between January and August 2025 in collaboration with the Army, Navy, Air Force, DSS, and other security agencies, also led to the arrest of 33 suspects involved in cultism, armed robbery, kidnapping, vandalism, and human trafficking.
Police Commissioner Olugbenga Adepoju, who briefed journalists in Port Harcourt, said the seizures included 21 AK-47 rifles, pistols, sub-machine guns, dynamites, improvised firearms, vehicles, and SIM cards. He noted that some of the arrested suspects were linked to the gruesome murder of lawyer Bright Owhor, underscoring the extent of criminal activity in the state.
The Police Command emphasized that the successful operation was part of ongoing efforts to restore peace and order in Rivers, particularly in light of the upcoming local government elections. Commissioner Adepoju assured residents that security forces remain committed to dismantling cult groups, dislodging criminal networks, and ensuring a safe environment for citizens.
