The Ondo State Government has announced a total ban on illegal markets and street trading within the Alagbaka area of Akure, the state capital. The Ministry of Environment expressed concern over the growing trend of traders converting major streets and unauthorized spaces into makeshift markets, a practice the government says has caused serious environmental, safety, and traffic problems.
According to the ministry, the activities of these traders not only obstruct free movement but also contribute to indiscriminate waste disposal, which undermines the cleanliness and aesthetics of the city, especially around government offices.
In a statement signed by the Commissioner for Environment, Dr. Tob Loko, the government issued a seven-day ultimatum to all traders operating illegally in the area to vacate their spots. Dr. Loko warned that at the end of the grace period, anyone who disregards the directive will be treated as an environmental law offender and sanctioned in line with existing laws.
The commissioner urged all concerned to comply promptly, emphasizing that the government will not tolerate activities that compromise public order and the environment in the state capital.
