A wave of public outrage has trailed an incident involving the Chairman of the Kwara State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB), Professor Raheem Adaramaja, who allegedly humiliated a vice principal and several teachers by compelling them to sweep the premises of Government Day Secondary School, Amule, in Ilorin.
According to eyewitnesses, the SUBEB boss stormed the school on an unscheduled visit and expressed dissatisfaction over the untidy environment. Despite explanations from staff that the school had only just resumed and students were responsible for the litter, Adaramaja reportedly insisted that the teachers, including the vice principal, clean the surroundings immediately.
The action, carried out in the presence of students and other staff, was described by many as degrading and unprofessional. The Ilorin East branch of the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) has condemned the chairman’s conduct, labeling it an act of humiliation against educators. The union demanded a public apology and vowed to escalate the matter to higher authorities to protect the integrity of teachers across the state.
Education stakeholders and members of the public have also criticized the incident, urging Governor Abdulrahman Abdulrazaq to intervene and ensure that such acts of disrespect towards educators are not repeated in the state’s school system.
