In a tragic incident at Soun High School in Ogbomoso, Oyo State, a dedicated teacher, Mr. Fatai Adegoke, lost his life after confronting students for gambling during school hours. The students allegedly became violent, beating him severely and causing fatal injuries.
After the assault, Mr. Adegoke was rushed to a nearby hospital for emergency treatment, but he later succumbed to the injuries sustained from the attack.
The shocking death has provoked outrage from educators, civil society groups and parents, who describe the incident as a stark reflection of growing indiscipline and moral decay within schools.
A joint statement from concerned teachers emphasized that the killing is not just a crime against an individual, but an assault on the teaching profession itself. They are calling on the Nigeria Union of Teachers, the Teaching Service Commission (TESCOM) and law-enforcement agencies to ensure that the perpetrators are swiftly identified, arrested and brought to justice.
As of the time of reporting, the state government has not yet issued an official statement on the matter.
